THE FILM
PROJECT BLACKBIRD
PROJECT BLACKBIRD Inc., a non-profit event and tour, turns Blackbird, the film, into a much larger conversation regarding discrepancies and stigmas in treatment mental health discussion. Around 10,200 people die a year as a direct result of an eating disorder. That's one person every 52 seconds. PROJECT BLACKBIRD's goal is to encourage connection, understanding, and vulnerability surrounding eating disorders and mental health struggles.
Specifically, PROJECT BLACKBIRD aims to help encourage mental health conversation in underrepresented communities where there is often shame present around said discussions. Black teenagers are 50% more likely than white teenagers to exhibit bulimic behavior, such as binging and purging, yet are half as likely to receive treatment. Many other underrepresented communities experience similar mental health struggles, yet these struggles are not addressed or spoken about. We hope to be the start of a conversation that can save, heal, and connect.
